Frequently asked questions

A few of the standard questions we get asked quite a lot

Tattoos

How old do I need to be to get a tattoo?

You must be 18 years or older to get a tattoo in the UK. We require valid photo ID for all clients, regardless of age. We do not tattoo anyone under 18, even with parental consent.

Do I need to book an appointment?

Most tattoos are done by appointment, which can be booked through our website or directly with one of our artists.
We occasionally offer walk-in availability depending on the artist’s schedule.

Do I need to leave a deposit?

Yes. A deposit is required to secure your tattoo appointment. This confirms your booking and is deducted from the final cost of your tattoo. Deposits are non-refundable.

How much will my tattoo cost?

Tattoo prices vary depending on size, detail, placement, and time required. Your artist will discuss pricing with you during the consultation or when booking.

How should I prepare for my tattoo?

Before your appointment we recommend you:
• Get a good night's sleep
• Eat a proper meal beforehand
• Stay hydrated
• Avoid alcohol or drugs before your session
• Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being tattooed

How do I care for my tattoo?

Your artist will provide full aftercare instructions after your session. Following these instructions carefully is essential to ensure your tattoo heals properly.

Can I bring a friend with me?

You are welcome to bring one guest, but space in the studio may be limited during busy periods.

Can I use numbing cream?

If you plan to use numbing cream, please discuss this with your artist before your appointment, as not all artists recommend or allow it.

Piercings

How old do I need to be to get a piercing?

Age restrictions vary depending on the piercing.

Generally:
• 16+ with valid ID for most piercings
• Under 16 may require parental consent and presence

Please contact us if you're unsure about a specific piercing.

Do you use a needle or the gun?

At The Cheshire Tattoo Studio we use professional sterile piercing needles, not guns.

Needles are the safest and most precise method for body piercings. They create a clean opening in the tissue, which helps reduce trauma, allows for better placement, and promotes smoother healing.

All equipment used during your piercing is fully sterilised and single-use where required, ensuring the highest hygiene and safety standards.

Do I need to book for a piercing?

Bookings are preferred so that our piercer can be fully prepared and set up for your appointment before you arrive.

This helps ensure a smooth experience and reduces waiting times.

We do accept walk-ins when availability allows, however this cannot always be guaranteed, especially during busy periods. To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking through our website in advance.

What jewellery do you use?

We use high-quality titanium jewellery as standard, which is safe for new piercings.
Gold or gem options are also be available for an additional cost.

Does it hurt?

Pain levels vary depending on the piercing and individual tolerance. Most piercings are very quick and only cause brief discomfort.

How long does a piercing take to heal?

Healing times vary depending on the piercing, but typical healing times include:

• Lobes: 6–8 weeks
• Cartilage: 3–6 months
• Nose: 2–4 months
• Tongue: 4–8 weeks

Your piercer will provide specific aftercare guidance.

How do I care for my piercing?

Clean your piercing twice daily with sterile saline solution and avoid touching it unnecessarily.
Do not remove jewellery until the piercing has fully healed.

What should I bring to my piercing appointment?

Please bring valid photo ID. If you're under 18 and eligible for a piercing with parental consent, your parent/guardian must attend with you.

What if I have a problem with my piercing?

If you experience any swelling, irritation, or concerns, contact the studio and we will be happy to advise you.
